I wanted so much to like this book, as yes, I too watch her on youtube and I expected something much better than what this book was. Predictable, perfect characters with unlimited power which Jenna herself spoke against in one of her videos. It's a good plot and you can see where it would be a great novel of some very glaringly obvious plot holes, character underdevelopment and cliches were fixed. Don't want to give any spoilers but in these intense fight scenes she has characters taking major injuries and walking away with zero damage and the recovery time of wolverine - this she does for even human characters. I figured out the two plot twists fairly easily like half way through the book if that long. Kept waiting on someone to die- no one does. One of her main characters has a trauma and has scary rage issues following and yet this is perfectly acceptable to everyone, no one addresses it- major missed opportunity for character development, it wouldve have been incredibly interesting if this character had become villainous. There is no believable reason why everyone hates chimeras and think they're the scum of the earth. come on! they're physically, genetically and immunologically superior beings. how are they not being used as super soldiers or being exploited as some government tool? How are they not being used as lab rats to exploit their superior health to create cures and antiaging serums, creating vaccines, isolating stem cells etc- couldn't this be why society hates them and think they're inferior? or why aren't they out there leveling a world that hates them and participating in petty/major crimes- couldn't this be why they're mistrusted. She states that chimeras are hated, beaten in the streets and no truly believable reason is given, this really annoyed me expecially since my imagination took off with plausable reasons. the catty rich bimbo with mindless lackey cliche? the funny gay friend? the offbeat super smart misfits with the oneliners? the orphaned superpowerful female character whose one achilles heel is a popular boy with a cute smile??? was there any cliche she missed? Narration was very iffy.obvious foreshadowing. euch. Technically I thought it was a mess and there are a lot of issues she needs to address if she plans on writing more books in the series, but at the end of the day I finished the thing so there were parts I liked I guess. I wouldnt be half as disappointed/annoyed at it if it wasn't for the fact hat she did everything she advises not doing in her videos. It's hard to write a book and put it through the whole process of getting out into the world but at the same time you can't just say do as I say and not what I doTags : Eve: The Awakening [Jenna Moreci] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I'll confess right now that I didn't finish this book. I was able to make it most of the way through, thanks to some very good writing, but the story and characters made me decide to move on to something more interesting.
The characters, even the main characters, are stereotypical and one-dimensional. Madison is the rich bitch. Heather is the gossip. Hayden is the brown-noser. Percy is fashionably gay. Jason is the lonely rich kid. JJ is the rich-hating rebel (but only when she thinks Eve is rich; she's fine with Jason and Percy for some inexplicable reason.) Ect.
And Eve? Eve is "the most powerful chimera in the world," a phrase repeated so often my eyes got tired of rolling. I'm all for a powerful protagonist, even one that eventually becomes the most powerful if we can see them make that journey. But when you introduce a character as THE best at the get-go, without any effort on their part (she was just born that way) you know you've got a poorly designed protagonist.
There is no shortage of antagonists in this story, but not a single one seems to be a real threat Eve, and not just because she's "the most powerful chimera in the world." All too often the author builds tension, sometimes very well, only to let our expectations down like a deflated balloon when the antagonists defeats themselves. When half the book is the antagonists screwing up, and the other half is Eve defeating them fairly easily with her super-awesome chimera powers, the story loses any luster it had very quickly.
I had hoped the story would get better as I kept reading, but it didn't. I simply cannot recommend this book to anyone.
I am just reading this book through for the second time. While the author is a marketing wizard, you really can tell that this is a first book. For most readers, especially those who are interested in YA or even NA (though this does have a YA tone to it) this book will be a perfectly enjoyable book, so I wouldn't encourage anyone NOT to buy it. I would say that if POV issues bother you, don't pick up this book. It is written in a third-limited style, but the POV hops head and breaks POV every other line. There are some other simple issues as well, like an overpowered female protagonist who steals away from any actual tension, a lot of inconsistencies with the plot and the power over-all, characters that while not flat are a bit cliched, inconsistent theme, and more than a few instances of deus ex machina. That being said, if you can suspend your disbelief and don't notice these types of issues, the book should be good for some light reading.
